  • Excluding yourself – How often do you check your website? Are you aware you can exclude traffic from certain IP addresses? This improves the accuracy of your site's metrics.
  • Internal search – By adding this feature to your website you can tell which keywords or phrases visitors use to get to you. Isn't that cool, right?
  • Ghost referrals – Have you ever noticed a bunch of irrelevant, strange sites showing up on your referral report? They add data to your profile in the hope you do business with them.
  • Engage visitors– You can use reverse engineering to create a custom segment of visitors who became clients. This way you can monitor your site's performance over time.
  • Objectives – What would you like visitors to do when they land on your website? Are they doing exactly that? Google Analytics will help you gauge this.

Excluding your own traffic in Google Analytics

To avoid getting skewed data, exclude web traffic from your IP address. Do not let internal traffic jumble up data for you. Here's how:

  • Go to your Google analytics account and sign in
  • Go to the 'Admin' tab then select the account followed by the property you intend to add a filter to.
  • Click +Filter then proceed as prompted.
  • Look up for your IP address using services like "what's my IP" then jot it down somewhere.
  • After adding the IP address to the filter, save changes and apply the filter. Now you're good to go.

Enabling internal searches

  • Go to your Google analytics account and sign in.
  • Go to Admin, open that account, property plus the view you'd wish to enable site searching on.
  • Choose 'view settings, ' and somewhere near the bottom of the panel you'll see Site-Search-Settings
  • Enable the site-search tracking option
  • Enter the query parameter ('s' for WordPress sites) and then save.

Segmenting out ghost referrals

  • Go to any reporting page, and you'll see an +add segment option. Select and add a new segment
